A Portland-based agency is encouraging high school marching bands in Oregon to play a pro-Obamacare song called “Live Long in Oregon” as part of a contest, the Daily Caller reported Friday.
According to the Daily Caller, the intent is to promote “Cover Oregon,” but the song doesn’t provide any details about the plan.
“We’ve heard the criticism that those ads don’t tell people enough what Cover Oregon is,” said Amy Fauver, Cover Oregon’s senior marketing manager.
Nevertheless, the Daily Caller added, she’s convinced the “detail-free” song will make Oregon residents visit the Cover Oregon website.
On Monday, she said, a call center in Salem received a record 500 calls. Oregon, the Daily Caller noted, has a population of about 3.9 million.
Cover Oregon, the state’s version of an Obamacare marketplace, has caught national attention with pointless ads costing taxpayers about $3 million. The ads, according to the Daily Caller, feature musical pieces with a somewhat “hipster, granola, outdoorsy vibe.”
While Time Magazine put the state at the top of its list of “best government-funded Obamacare Ads,” not everyone is impressed.
An article at PJ Media, for example, says the ads “take local artists and make them propaganda puppets.”
“They also seem designed to make “progressives” feel good about themselves while doing nothing to educate the public about, well, what the ads are actually about. Oregonians can fly with their hearts right down to the unemployment office or to those second and third jobs they have to get because Obamacare caused their employer to cut their hours. Thanks, Obamacare!” Bryan Preston added.
A post at the conservative blog Hot Air calls the ads “totally useless” and compares them to the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine.”
“Hey, man, we’re just living in a Yellow Submarine world in which the Yellow Submarine is a taxpayer subsidized acid trip,” Mary Katherine Ham said.
Ham posted some of the lyrics to one of the songs:
“We fly with our own wings. Care about the same things. We stand strong together. So let me hear you say. We fly with our own wings. Dreamin’ all the big dreams. Long live Oregonians; we’re free to be healthy. Long live Oregonians; we’re free to be healthy.”
Perhaps the harshest criticism of the effort came from a reader at the Daily Caller, who compared the ads to Nazi propaganda.
“Yep….we are getting more and more like Hitler’s Germany with every passing day!!! Have fun folks, watching America dying right before your eyes,” the reader said.
