If you’re familiar with acclaimed director/writer Neil LaBute (“Nurse Betty,” “In the Company of Men”), then you understand creates quality projects starring some of the biggest stars. Enter up-and-comer Brian Norris, who emerges in a recurring role in LaBute’s first television outing, “Full Circle,” which launches on DirecTV on October 9, 2013.
Norris is also set to make an appearance on Showtime’s new highly-touted series, “Masters of Sex.” On November 3rd, Norris turns up with his wife at the office of sexuality pioneer Dr. Masters, played by Michael Sheen.
Since arriving in Hollywood from Northern California, Norris has appeared in “Longmire,” “Castle,” “Awake,” Pair of Kings,” “Mad Men,” “NCIS,” “Community,” “Lie to Me,” “Big Love,” “General Hospital,” “The Unit” and “A Thousand Words” with Eddie Murphy.
We recently caught up with Brian Norris to find out more about his upcoming roles and what it was like joining the ranks with all these stars.
What can you tell us about your role in the new series “Full Circle”?
BRIAN: I play Hunter, a snarky waiter who works at the restaurant Ellipses where the show is set. He was a great character to play, usually showing up in the middle of some intense dramatic moment with food, an air of disgust, and a sarcastic smile.
It was cool getting to be one of the more consistent part of the season too. With so many characters only showing up for an episode or two, it was fun to play with Hunter’s arc over the season as he deals with these crazy patrons.
Considering this was celebrated writer and filmmaker Neil LaBute’s first TV project, how was the shoot? Were you nervous working with such a talented creator?
BRIAN: I was incredibly excited to work on Neil’s first television show. I have been a fan of his for years, working on Bash, Autobahn, The Shape of Things, and The Distance From Here while I was at UCLA studying theater. In fact, I worked closely with Ron Eldard on Bash so I felt excited and up for the challenge! And with a writer like Neil, the language and the dialogue is so good that it has all of the answers you need.
In addition you were working with literally an “all-star” cast on the project. Were you intimated or what was it like working with all these amazing actors?
BRIAN: I remember being asked to set to rehearse a big scene. I was on lunch at the time so I hurried over as quickly as I could. When I stepped onto set I saw what looked like half of Hollywood, all working on the same scene! Kate Walsh, Cheyanne Jackson, Billy Campbell, Ally Sheedy, Tom Felton and more and…me. And that was incredible – to step onto set and immediately be treated like their peer, all of us working together to tell the same story.
What can you share about your upcoming appearance on the new Showtime series, “Masters of Sex”?
BRIAN: I can’t give away too much, but I can say that I play Jake Prescott, a young newlywed who visits Dr. Masters looking for help. I got to do a recurring role early on Mad Men and I had missed working on a period show. The look of the sets, the costumes, the language – it was like time travel.
Any fun stories from the set you can reveal?
BRIAN: In the show, my character and his wife are just starting to learn about the Kama Sutra. It was hysterical looking for the positions we talked about on the show. Just imagine seeing that as a young newlywed in 1956!
And lastly, how can your fans keep up with you?
BRIAN: The best way is to follow me on twitter @BrNorris, ‘Like’ my Facebook Page, and check out updates and clips at www.BrianNorrisOnline.com.
Currently you can hear me as the voice of Wendy’s Fast Food on television and radio, and soon I start production on the new comic series “Dimpled & Bowing!” which should drop next year.
Thanks, Brian! We’ll be watching!
