Being both a nature lover, and a car collector, I’ve always dreamed of owning a house out in the country. I fantasized about a huge barn that could serve as a large garage, and maybe even a recording studio too, for my song writing. As luck would have it, I came across a listing for a foreclosure back in 2009 for a great old house in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia.
The house was pretty inexpensive, but it needed an entire renovation. It also was not my dream house. It only had a two car carport, but with over 1/2 of an acre of land, I figured the large garage could come later. I managed to buy the house for a great price, and got to work on the renovations.
Properties like these were just sitting on the market back in 2009, when I was urging my readers to jump in the market and buy. Those that did definitely got themselves a great deal, as prices are rising all over the Northern Virginia, and DC markets. This of course also includes the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, and of course Harper’s Ferry, which is a great tourist destination, with tons of civil war history and two rivers for rafting, fishing or just gazing!
Since I planned to live in my Harper’s Ferry dream house, I renovated to my own taste, keeping the great features of the 100 year old house, while adding all of the amenities like a whirlpool tub and separate double shower in the master bath, along with heated tile flooring. The kitchen features stainless steel induction and electric cooking, convector microwave, large refrigerator with bottom freezer, soft close cabinets, and of course a granite island with back-splash tile.
I have enjoyed some nice times there already. I’ve invited my family over, explored the surrounding civil war sites and antique dealers, and I’ve spent many super quiet nights there, which is a great change of pace from the NOVA / DC area.
Despite the fact that I love the house and the area, I really don’t use it enough, and being in the real estate business, I’m ready for my next project. It seems as we live our lives, and achieve some of our dreams, our priorities sometimes change along the way. With that in mind, my Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia dream house is now for sale and could be yours!
